Want to check the “learning a new language” thing?
No matter what the goals 🎯 are, students want the same things. Easy, fast paced, affordable lessons. You might need to learn a language so you can speak it on an upcoming trip, communicate with family, relatives or even take on new job responsibilities.
You as a student 👩🏾🎓, or parent of a student 👨👩👦, need to make sure that you follow these steps and you’ll be on your way mastering that new language faster than you ever imagined 🤩
✅ Set learning goals
Explain your tutor which are your goals. Set your detailed goals together, organise the learning process and be sure that you can see long-term and short-term challenges.
✅ Learn the "right" things
There is nothing wrong learning a new language from a mobile app 📲, songs 🎶 or movies 📽. But... you should always keep in mind that it's just a program!
That means it will never organise a lesson specifically for you and let's face it, some words that you learn are a bit outdated or awkward 🤨. And even if you memorise the words you can't use them in the right context 🥺.
On the contrary your tutor will help you learn first the important and mot frequent words that will help you understand the language.
Bonus 🌟 from having a tutor 👩🏫: Colloquial phrases, everyday language and cultural customs 🥳.
✅ Study smart
Make sure your tutor has interesting ideas and your lesson is not an ordinary- old school lesson. Your tutor - especially if the students are not adults- should use
- colours
- flashcards-a learning drill to aid memorisation
- online games
-gestures
-online platforms with blackboard, sounds and rewards
-role play etc.
✅ Seek out real-life practice
Ask your tutor for advise! "Where can i practice the language outside the class?"
There are many libraries organising free events, which i'm sure you will find useful. In mygreekteacher.org we organise a free event every month. Places are limited, but students have the opportunity to practice Greek for 1h and 30' and be guided by the tutor. For future events you can check here: https://www.mygreekteacher.org/news
✅ Learn about the culture
Researchers have found that when children understand the culture and the context behind the pieces they read in a second language they actually learn to read better and more efficient.
✅ TEST TIME 😰
We all know!... even the word "test" 📄 sounds awful! But!...not only you can see your progress 📈, but most important tests are made with a way that will reveal every detail that you don't remember, or have misunderstood. So instead of feeling exposed, relax! Your tutor is here to see what you don't know or what you haven't understood completely and assist you. You have all the time you need!
