Modern greek language likes english words

Updated: Jul 15, 2020

Greek language is an independent branch of the Indo-European family of languages and has a long and well-documented history. Greek language, as many things in life, has changed a lot through years and it is still evolving. Globalization 🌏🌍🌎 also affected the language and hence modern greek has many english words that were slightly transformed so they look greek. It's true that some words can be said with a greek synonym that sounds better, but still, the changes are part of the evolution of the (colloquial) language and we can't ignore them.

Slang but useful

Let's look at a few words....

φρικάρω - frikaro (=freak out). greek synonyms: εκπλήσσομαι, αγανακτώ 😮😲

σερφάρω - serfaro (=browsing on the internet), in greek you can use the phrase πλοηγούμαι στο διαδίκτυο 💻

κουλ - cool, also κούλαρε-coolare (=when you tell someone to be cool). Yes, it sounds weird but Greeks also want to be cool ❄🤠

ο/η μάνατζερ - manager, μανατζάρω - managaro (=i am managing), in greek you can also use the word διαχειρίζομαι 👨‍💼‍👩🏾‍💼

ο γκατζετάκιας - gadgetakias (=the person who knows a lot about, or buys a lot of, gadgets)

The greek word for gadgets, η χρήσιμη συσκευή, is not widely used. 👴🏾👨‍🦳

σνομπάρω - snobaro (=being a snob) 👨‍🏫👩🏾‍🎓👩🏼‍🏫

τηλεκοντρόλ - tilecontrol (=remote control). Τηλέ (tile) in greek means from a distance, the greek word for that is τηλεχειριστήριο 🎮

ο τατουατζής - tattooajis (=the artist who draws the tattoo). There is no greek word for the artist, however tattoo in greek is δερματοστιξία 🤡

τουιτάρω - twitaro (= i'm tweeting) 🐥

το χόμπι (=hobby) and the more interesting word ο χομπίστας - hobistas (=the person who doesn't care about things, the really κουλ person who is just doing everything for fun) 🤿🪀

κλικάρω - clickaro (= i'm clicking), in greek you could say πατάω το κομβίο

σκοράρω - scoraro (=i score), in greek you could say πέτυχα τον στόχο μου, although it's a way bigger phrase 🏌️‍♀️🤽🏾‍♂️ 🏉

words that have to do with the internet 💻💿💾🔌 σκανάρω - scanaro (=i'm scanning)

γκουγκλάρω - googlaro (=i'm googling)

χακάρω - hackaro (=i'm hacking)

And of course εγώ ποστάρω (i'm posting) this, and i hope native greek speakers remembered all these words that haven't been in use for very long, and that foreign speakers have learned something new.

If your level is advanced, you could try these exercises! Good luck! http://www.pi-schools.gr/download/lessons/hellenic/lykeio/glosikes_askhseis/06.pdf
