Speak in Greek with the locals.
If you have already been in Greece, i'm sure that you have realized in some places not many Greek people speak English. However, if you are able to speak Greek with the locals you will be able to:
- Get the service you want and get it faster. It might be that you are at the local coffee place or the local super market. If you speak the language you will get better and quicker assistance, since it's easier for the employees to communicate in their native language.
- Avoid the tourist traps. Some businesses think it's easy to take advantage of tourists. It happens in every country and it's also happened to me when I've visited other countries. It's always the case that if you speak the language you will understand many conversations between employees and avoid things and situations that aren't convenient or helpful for you.
- Discover how locals live. When you speak the language, or at least you know the basics, you will be able to randomly speak with Greek people. For sure you can ask them for suggestions about food, or a nice place to have a drink or listen to some music. You will have enjoyable experiences in places that may not be in the travel guidebooks.
